The top champions globally to counter Gnar include Zeri, Kalista, and Sivir. These champs are all great at countering Gnar with win rates over 57%. Even if these Gnar counter picks are not chosen in the same position as you, it's not a good idea to take him into one of these matchups. They will usually crush Gnar.
Conversely, if the other team choses either Rammus or Maokai, you should seriously consider selecting him, as he easily destroys these champions with win rates over 54% against each ofthem.
How to Counter Gnar
Gnar is a formidable lane bully, especially against melee top laners. However, Gnar is relatively weaker early on because he doesn't have his Ultimate R available. Utilize this opportunity to apply early game pressure by forcing him to use his E to maintain spacing.
Watch out for Gnar's level 6, as this is a massive power spike for him. His well-timed Ultimate R can dismantle an entire team. Avoid clustered team fights when he reaches this level, and aim for open spaces or more scattered formations.
Keep tabs on Gnar's form. He can either deal significant damage or tank damage depending on his current state. The enemy can completely counter him by choosing to disengage when he gets his mega form.
Gnar's Ultimate R won�t be very effective in open spaces. He may resort to flanking the enemy team, which can cause him to get caught out and killed. Exploit such situations to turn the tide in your favor.
When Gnar�s E is down, he becomes susceptible to ganks. If you manage to bait it out, Gnar will have a really hard time escaping, giving you an excellent opportunity to turn the tide in your favor.
Gnar is a significant threat in the mid-game, especially when his Ultimate R is up. Delay team fights until his Rage Bar is depleted or just about to deplete. Once his mega form is down, the threat of his Ultimate R will also diminish significantly.
In the late game, ensure to monitor Gnar's movement on the map. If Gnar is not with his team, it can be an opportunity to force a fight relying on the numerical advantage.
